Patrick Sinclair entered the British army as an ensign in the
2nd battalion, 42nd highlanders, in 1758. After service in the
colonies, he returned to England and was promoted to captain. In 1775
he received the appointment of Lieutenant Governor of Michilimackinac.
Upon landing in New York, however, Sinclair was taken prisoner under
suspicion of organizing the Indians against the colonies. He returned
to England and did not arrive at Michilimackinac until 1779.
Amazingly, despite these inauspicious beginnings, Patrick
Sinclair became the most important man on the upper Great Lakes...
